die Artistichs to Artlanguages
Book display by Philipp Schwalb
April 29 – May 13, 2024
P will present 4 documents of his artistic work to date, that are situated between exhibited constellations, art editions, publications, and mind maps. These documents revolve around the question: does an artist have an “artistic ego” or are they just an “I(ch)” or something ambivalent in between both. This question is loosely linked to personal and changing definitions of art and/or language. The 4 documents will be accompanied by the poster announcing P's - Image Constellation Panel - MnemosynePictureAtlas -, a social figuration about metals and dissection, panel 75 of Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne Atlas, and an inverted box with a drawing of a shelf. This installation is somewhere in between the 17th and the 21st century, hence the 19th century. It was at the very beginning of V's time at the institution, in 2015. Together with H, V organised events on overproduction and ambivalence in contemporary art. For one event they invited TND (J, D, C) for 3 essays, but only J and D came. Though somehow later C also showed up. P attended this event. In this context he talked to H about Reinhart Koselleck and how the definitions of art changed in the 19th century. Things come together again. P met J at Hungarian Pastries in 2021 and J talked about his research for a review of Deserting from the Culture Wars. 1996 Reinhart Koselleck worked at the Warburg Haus. D organised an exhibition related to Erich Auerbach's notion of mimesis. V showed Dandies here. In the same place, W.E.B. Du Bois played an important role in the presentation of C's work. P will meet H again to speak about Ursula Le Guin's artistic roots in the aftermath of the 19th century and its languages of art. Are these narrations connected?
